Hitchcock spends time in The Birds, introducing the principal characters Daniels and Brenner and setting up their relationship prior to any action taking place which increases the suspense. A strange real-life attack by smokey shearwaters in Capitola, Calif., in 1961, believed by some to have occurred because of diatom poisoning of the anchovies eaten by birds resulting in extreme aggressiveness, was researched by Hitchcock in preparation for the film.
